KUALA LUMPUR 8 March - The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has deployed one aircraft and three ships in a search-and-rescue operation following the disappearance of a Beijing-bound Malaysia Airlines (MAS) plane today.
MMEA C3i (Command, Control, Communication and Information) director Capt (Maritime) Hamid Mohd Amin said that the operation was launched at 8.30 am.
"The aircraft is the C415 plane and the ships are the KM Segantang, KM Amanah and KM Langkawi," he said.
MAS Flight MH370, carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew, lost contact with the Subang air traffic control at 2.40 am, about two hours after taking off from the KL International Airport. It was scheduled to arrive in Beijing at 6.30 am (Beijing time).
MAS CEO Ahmad Jauhari Yahya said the aircraft went missing in the airspace over the South China Sea somewhere between Malaysia and Vietnam.-- BERNAMA
